Underfloor heating (UFH) is a highly efficient system of conditioning comfort, because:
• The distribution of heat (energy thermal) is at ground level upwards
• The wall or ceiling heat emitters are eliminated
• The uniform heat distribution is out through space and is thus avoided cold pockets
UFH System Types
There are two main types of low heating technologies in the soil depending on the heat source. ie
• electric heater element type (in the form of cable or mat)
And,
• The hot water circulating pipe type (power plants)
Under different circumstances and needs of each type has its own applications.
Which is right for my home?
Examples of situations in which electrical heating elements are most appropriate are:
• When the soil is already high for integrating a system of pipes
• In an existing building, when the level finished floor can not increase further to integrate the pipes
• When excess electricity is cheap or available in the building (say, using solar panels or wind turbines PV)
• When a nominal high back pressure hot water circulation pump (necessary systems for power stations) can not be built into the system.
On the other hand the integrated piping system is best for you if:
• Cheap Hot water is available in existing boilers or hot water added to his.
• When using zoning and a condensing boiler in your home heating system.
• On the premises of the geothermal heat pump
• When enough space is available above the sub floor to integrate the heater pipes.
• When the solar water heating is available
• When applying for a better energy economy
What ever is your choice, heating underfloor heating (UFH) offers you the person monitoring the temperature, avoid the annoying and awkward terminal heating equipment, and offers much less maintenance.
Consider these well in advance!
Some important points to keep in mind when considering a UFH system are;
• A product specially designed for a specific type of facility and therefore the orientation of the manufacturers should be sought and respected. For example, suitable for metal tubes embedded UFH in general does not fit under the wood flooring installation and vice versa.
• If a solid floor timber or the bottom of the heaters should be well insulated with an adequate layer of insulation and also reflects the doubling of aluminum as an insulating barrier steam to prevent condensation (if a moisture-proof membrane is available under the basement).
• If the existing building and with solid floors pipeline or from the plant is usually set on the floor and finished with wood, laminate or any other tiles. The finished floor level will be high. This in turn would require the lifting of the doors, baseboards, etc.
• In the case of electrical heating elements heating mat is (which is in effect heating elements connected to a flexible material) can be placed on the surface rather than embedded in the sheet. This has the added advantage of maintaining the cable element and spacing for uniform heat distribution.
• The tile flooring elements or water heater can be embedded in the adhesive which is generally flexible.
• Wood floors suspended pose a different situation altogether. In general, piping or wiring can be mounted between the joists (clipped or clamped to the underside) with adequate insulation and vapor barrier aluminum underneath. All joints should be properly sealed with sealing tape. Although opinions may differ on the isolation of the wood floor, as moisture is detrimental to the wood (which is a good insulator, but readily absorbs moisture) of a steam sealer and insulation (depending on plant design U-value) is prudent. Furthermore, we must not forget that the wooden floor will exposed to two different temperatures on either side which could distort the material unless adequately insulated.
• Another technique used to suspend pipes or cables under the wooden floor is filled to a factory under the timer job embedded heaters. This intensive process is however slow hand intensive and therefore expensive. The masonry infill will be too heavy and unless you are sure the force floor this method is not recommended.
• The third method for wood floors is the setting of an aluminum plate to support the heater elements below. This is tedious and costly in terms of material and labor.
Assessing the pros and cons for the installation type that best fits your application and the bag is a necessity before completion. Another issue to consider is whether your new installation in floor heating systems will qualify for the SEI grant aid.
